Oh, Lithuania, from your rolling dunes to your charming capital, you were the place we’d pick to live. We started our time in Lithuania at the Curonian Spit, not only getting within one kilometer of the Russian border, but also letting the amber grains of sands polish our feet and the salty air fill our lungs, prepping us for the long bus journey to Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius. We even got a coastal send-off with a double rainbow and colorful sail boats.

Comfortable and easy-going, Vilnius charmed us not with spectacular sights or a “perfectly maintained” Old Town, but with good vibes and ways of being that effortlessly integrated the old and new. For nearly a week, we shared the lovely city with locals, wandering the cobbled streets, sitting in plazas and squares, people-watching, and eating ice cream (notice a trend?). To add a little adventure, we took a day trip to the photo-perfect Trakai for the requisite 14th century castle-in-the-lake scenery. The capital was a compelling mix of Lithuanian heritage, Russian/Soviet influence, and artistic, fresh energy that felt impossible to leave behind.
